Project

It has been a few years since we took our sander out of its box.  About 4 years ago, we began the process of stripping and refinishing our dining room set.  It all started because:
A) I hated it the way it was: light wood with a high-gloss finish and white legs and chair backs.
and B) we bought 2 extra chairs to seat 6, and they didn't match our original 4. 

So we sanded down 2 chairs and the table, restained them, and put a new satin finish on them.  But we never did the other 4 chairs, so we had 2 remaining white chairs and the 2 un-matching wood chairs. 

But now, as we prepare to move, I have found my dream dining table: a round, black extension table.  And while I have yet to find my dream dining chairs, we plan to purchase the table for our new house.  So we will use our current chairs with the new table and use our current rectangular table as a project surface for scrap-booking or whatever need we may have elsewhere in the house.

It is so much trouble to completely sand and refinish the chairs.  And since the new table is black, our new plan is to paint all the chairs black.  They will look sleek and coordinating with our beautifully stained wood table for now and will also go with our new black round table when we get it!  And repainting is so much easier than refinishing -- all the sanding we have to do is to give the current surface some texture so that the primer and paint have something to grip onto! 

So the sander came out of its box on this sunny (but super windy -- which is nice to blow all the dust away if you don't sit on the wrong side of the chair!) day, and the painting project has begun.  As soon as the white chairs are sanded (the other 4 probably have enough texture to not require sanding and can just be primed and painted from their current state), it is off to Home Depot for one can of no-VOC primer and no-VOC black paint.  We will also put a no-VOC water-proof sealer over the paint, but first thing's first -- let's get these suckers all the same color for the first time in 4 years!!

And we'll have an entirely "new," and more contemporary-styled dining set that isn't too matchy-matchy for only the cost of 3 cans of primer, paint, and sealer!
